Stars line up to sing the praises of Dubliners legend Ronnie

The Independent, February 23, 2008

Patricia McDonagh

HE has the "greatest voice in the world" and led a folk band that now makes "Nirvana look like girls".

Praise indeed from the leader of the world's top rock band, Bono, for Dublin's greatest trouper Ronnie Drew, the once bearded supremo of Irish music who watched as his peers in the industry paid homage to him and his legacy last night.

A firmament of stars, including Andrea Corr, Shane MacGowan, Sinead O'Connor and U2 took to the stage on the Late Late Show to sing their hearts out in a one-off performance.

Dressed in a sober black suit, with a red patterned scarf around his neck, the beloved founder of the Dubliners said the performance was "great" and "magnificent".

"I'm speechless. I am really knocked out and honoured and grateful. I don't think I deserve it" he told Pat Kenny.

Mr Drew, who has just finished his latest bout of treatment for throat cancer at St Vincent's Hospital, Dublin, said that ever since the song was written he feels stronger.

"I feel stronger and my hair is even growing back," he joked.

The song, entitled 'The Ballad of Ronnie Drew' was composed by Robert Hunter, Bono, The Edge and Simon Carmody and was recorded at Windmill Lane on January 14 and 15.

Wearing his trademark wraparound tinted sunglasses, U2 frontman Bono paid tribute to the "most powerful male voice in the world".

"He is a prime fighter and a fighter always fights harder when the crowd is cheering. That is why we did this," said the rock legend.

'The Ballad of Ronnie Drew' is due to be released in March.

U2 guitar sale helps raise $2.4m [22 Apr 2007|04:41pm]

[ music | U2 One ]

The favourite guitar of U2's the Edge has been sold at an auction that raised about $2.4m (£1.2m) for a charity set up in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The Gibson Les Paul used on every U2 tour since 1985 sold for $240,000 (£120,000), while one owned by Jimi Hendrix fetched $400,000 (£200,000).

Other items of U2 memorabilia included a pair of singer Bono's sunglasses.

The Edge co-founded Music Rising, a charity to replace instruments lost or destroyed in Hurricane Katrina.

Julien's Auctions, who organised the Icons of Music sale at New York's Hard Rock Cafe, said it included the largest selection of U2 memorabilia ever made available to collectors.

An autographed guitar belonging to Bono sold for $180,000 (£90,000), a bass guitar donated by Adam Clayton for $22,000 (£11,000), and Larry Mullen Jr.'s tom-tom drum fetched $19,000 (£9,500).

The Edge donated other items including a 1958 Gibson archtop guitar, that sold for $105,000 (£52,500), and clothing accessories such as a signature knitted hat which earned $11,000 (£5,500).

"I have to say that it is a strange feeling to see some of your stuff up here," the 45-year-old guitarist told Reuters news agency.

A saxophone signed by former U.S. President Bill Clinton fetched $54,000 (£27,000), while $30,000 (£15,000) was paid for a pair of John Lennon's round, blue-tinted sunglasses.

The Edge, real name David Evans, created Music Rising in 2005 with record producer Bob Ezrin and Henry Juszkiewicz, chairman of guitar-makers Gibson.

"One of the good things about globalization is it has created a single international music community, and I feel very much part of it," he has said.

"So this doesn't seem like it's someone else's problem. It's really our problem too."

He said jazz from New Orleans "was the forerunner of everything."

"You mix jazz with European rhythms, and that's rock 'n' roll really. You can make the argument that it all started on the streets of New Orleans with the jazz funerals."

Hurricane Katrina hit the southern U.S. in August 2005, causing flooding in the Louisiana city of New Orleans that killed some 1,300 people.

The population of New Orleans fell from nearly 500,000 to less than 200,000 in the wake of the disaster.

Bono Keeps the Magic Alive

Daily Telegraph, November 10, 2006

Kathy McCabe

WHEN Bono sings, millions listen. When Bono talks, action follows. But how U2 write and perform their music remains as big a mystery to them as it did when the Irish band formed in Larry Mullen's kitchen 30 years ago.

As revealed during our chat last week in his backstage dressing room at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre, Bono and bandmates remain committed to keeping the magic alive for them and their audience.

It is their respect for the magic and the audience that keeps them at the top of their game.

"You have to be really wary of craft. Because in the end, alchemy is where it's at. Turning heavy metals into gold and silver is the business of the day and that's not cash but that's nice too," he says laughing.

"You want magic; it's a magic trick to turn a stadium into a club, and that's impossible by the way. It's a small miracle. You don't just do that by craft.

"There's a name for people who, when they see the rabbit go into the hat are still surprised when the rabbit comes out of the hat – they're called magicians. They are as surprised as anyone even though they know where the wires are.

"We have all the wires, all the lights and the trickery but for it really to be magic something else has to happen and that isn't all to do with us.

"It also has to do with the people who come to the show and how much they want it to happen and their connections to the songs."

One big step for U2

It also has to do with the band members not falling flat on their face. Having walked on to the gargantuan Vertigo stage myself and down its very steep ramp to the smaller, circular B stage which extends into the crowd, it is surprising Bono, The Edge or Adam Clayton rarely misstep.

"I came off a couple of times I think during the last tour," Bono says. "It's a very physical thing to be a performer on that stage and it's either going to dwarf you, so you better dwarf it.

"This is the lesson that we learned on Zoo TV – which I'm very, very proud of – is that you know the size of the screens do not dictate how less or much you can own a stage. You have to own it some other way. In a way you have to step inside the songs, let them tell you what to do. And there does seem to be this thing with our audience, like a lot of our music, it's like a lovers' row."

"There's a little bit of wrestling about it. Is is wrestling or boxing? Actually it starts out boxing, it goes through judo and if things are going really well at the end, it's tai chi."

Setting the tone

That "boxing" also means U2 can't please everybody. With a catalogue of songs which span 11 studio albums, a considerable amount of B-sides, covers and soundtrack tunes, coming up with the perfect set that would meet with universal approval is impossible.

"So to make this thing happen there needs to be this relationship. People don't want to be patronised, they don't want to have their buttons pushed, in fact, they like to push your buttons. When it's really good you feel the crowd making you better," Bono says.

"That is one of the greatest feelings you can feel. It's hard to get 70,000 people to agree on anythingso when it happens ..."

Man talk

U2 may not have been teen poster boys but they still attract their share of female adulation. Does Bono get marriage proposals from women in the front rows, with handwritten signs?

"They say other things. I am delighted to report they don't consider me marrying material. I keep telling them I am not purely a sexual creature, I'm a person, I have feelings, I am a human person," he minces, feigning hurt that any fan would just want him for his body. "But I am amazed (by that). I think what it is we are not a boy band, we are a man band. We make men's music and girls like that."

Singled out

Bono credits The Edge as the man behind their third retrospective collection, U218 Singles, released on November 18.

And admits he cannot stand to listen back to the band's early work.

"I had nothing to do with it. I can't stand it. I can't stand listening to our music, I break out in a rash. It's all the coulda, shouldas. And in the'80s, I think I sang like a girl. A girl with a mullet," he laughs.

"One of the reasons why we did the book (U2 By U2) and the album is that if we're caught in retrospection, it seems like a good moment to stop for a while.

"We have a younger audience that has come through because of the last two albums. And (this) makes it easy for people to get it all in one.

"Edge, when we did the decade collections, actually made me sit down and listen to the running order.

"As gauche and as raw and as unfinished as a lot of the lyrics felt to me, there was an ecstatic quality to the early U2 that's very rare.

"I can now understand why somebody wouldn't like it but I understand more why other people thought it was great. The hardest thing to contrive is joy; it's actually impossible and there's pure joy in there in places. And there's also a little boy screaming his head off, or a little girl."

*U2 perform at Telstra Stadium tonight, Saturday and Monday, with limited tickets still available.

U218 Singles is released on November 18.

I can't believe that I have been the moderator of this community for almost a year. I have started running out of ideas of how to attract new members. There have been a few things added to the community which took a lot of time to agree to have done. I'm glad I didn't lose a co mod because I wasn't big on the idea but after a while I'm glad the changes were done. I haven't decided if the background will be changed yet because I have been to busy with work and other things. I'm open to ideas to bring more members to the community. I have read a lot about the end of the tour being delayed and a few fans not taking it well. I would like U2 fans to put themselves in the bands shoes and maybe you will understand how hard it was to make the choice they did. All that needed to be said was a family member was sick without the family member being named because no one needs to know any other details. I might get angry comments because of this but it wouldn't be the first time. I know I will not be attending a U2 concert on this tour but I do have a suggestion for fans who are waiting to hear about future dates, be patient the tour will continue when the band is ready.

U2 Awarded Human Rights Accolade [11 Dec 2005|02:04pm]

[ music | U2 One ]

Irish rock band U2 has been awarded a prestigious accolade by campaign group Amnesty International.

The band have won the 2005 Ambassador of Conscience Award for their "21 years of commitment" to equality.

The body's secretary general Irene Khan said the band had shown "leadership in linking music to the struggle for human rights and human dignity worldwide has been ground-breaking and unwavering".

U2's Bono is a respected campaigner on global debt issues and human rights.

Ms Khan said: "From Live Aid in 1985 and Amnesty International's 1986 Conspiracy of Hope tour, through to Live 8, U2 has arguably done more than any other band to highlight the cause of global human rights in general and Amnesty International's work in particular."

She added: "They have inspired and empowered millions with their music and by speaking out on behalf of the poor, the powerless and the oppressed."

Art for Amnesty founder Bill Shipsey said U2 would be worthy candidates of the award for their music alone.

"With songs like Pride (In The Name of Love), MLK, Miss Sarajevo, Mothers of the Disappeared, Walk On (written for Burmese political activist Aung San Syu Kyi)... U2 has helped spread the human rights message of Amnesty International to a global audience," he said.

U2 are currently in the middle of a world tour, with dates in December in the US and in Australia at the start of 2006.

Bono 'Crushed' by PM's Stance on Global Poverty [26 Nov 2005|10:44am]

jaravande
[ mood | sick ]
[ music | U2 Walk On ]

CTV, November 25, 2005

Appearing on Parliament Hill, U2 frontman Bono said he's not just disappointed -- he's crushed -- by Prime Minister Paul Martin's failure to commit 0.7 percent of GDP to eliminating global poverty.

With a federal election looming over Ottawa, Bono appealed to the "better nature" of what he called a "better country" to implore their prime minister to make the commitment without further delay.

At a packed press conference Friday afternoon, the outspoken Irish rocker told reporters Martin's reluctance to make the pledge flies in the face of public opinion.

"The Canadian people are ahead of the prime minister on these global poverty issues," Bono said, pointing to a recent EKOS poll that found widespread support for "more of the national purse into the world's poorest countries."

"This is the reason why I'm a fan of Canada," he added.

The fact the opinions of Martin and the Canadian public appear so far apart when it comes to meeting the 0.7 percent aid target set out in the Make Poverty History campaign, he said, have left him mystified and angry.

"I'm not just disappointed, I'm crushed actually," he said, blasting the former finance minister for not finding a way to make the numbers work.

"I'm mystified actually by the man at this point...I just think it's a huge opportunity that he's missing out on."

Conceding the "absurdity" of a rockstar weighing in on such serious political issues, Bono said this issue is simply too dire for him to ignore.

"What we're really talking about is extreme poverty, stupid poverty, a brutal poverty that can be avoided," he explained. "It's something we just cannot permit."

When asked whether he thought Martin should be punished come election day, Bono warned the PM to expect to pay a political price.

"I think he will hear about it and feel it in the election, I'm absolutely sure of that -- this is not to be underestimated," he said, promising to raise the issue with every political leader he could during his time in the capital.

Mayor Bob Chiarelli has officially declared Friday U2 day in Ottawa, to coincide with a concert event the capital has been anticipating wildly for almost a year.

Since the Ottawa stop in the band's worldwide Vertigo tour was announced, Bono has made no secret the gig carries unusually political overtones.

"Paul Martin asked us to play the gig," Bono said when the date was first confirmed, promising to turn the event into a celebration or protest -- depending on whether or not Martin decided to sign on to spending 0.7 percent of national income on foreign aid.

Bono, who lent his considerable star power to Martin's Liberal leadership victory celebration, has repeatedly described Martin as a "friend."

During an April concert in Vancouver, however, he chastised Martin for breaking a promise to meet the target.
